2. History of Korean Baduk

¡Ø Introduction of the International Rules of Baduk
Sunjang Baduk is quite different from Baduk as played internationally. The Japanese introduced the international rules of Baduk, as well as westernising ideas, during their period of occupation from the late 19th century. Baduk's popularity spread through all social classes very quickly. Kim Man-su, Bek Nam-gyu and Noh Sa-cho were recognised as Kuksu, but in the Sunjang Baduk succession.

¡Ø The Rules of Sunjang Baduk

Because of lack of evidence, it is unclear when Baduk was brought from China to Korea, but it is believed to have been in Old Joseon period. Then it was introduced to Japan during the Three Nation period, through the nation of Paekche, along with other cultural influences. There are two theories about the timing of Baduk's introduction to Korea. One is the so-called "Kija" theory and the other is the "Han-sagun" theory.
