1. The Origin of Baduk(Go)

¡Ø The Oldest Record of Baduk

The oldest surviving record of a game of Baduk is in Mang-u-chung-lak-jib [Wang You Qing Le Ji (Carefree and Innocent Pastime)] written in the Song dynasty, which details a match between the prince Son-chek [Sun Ce] and his general Yeo-baum [Lu Fan], in Oh [Wu] (one of the three powers in the Three Kingdoms period of old China) in AD 200. Because of the popularity of Baduk during the Song and Tang dynasties, it may be doubted whether this is true record or not.
The oldest record involving a Korean player is of a game betweenf Kim Ok-gyun, who went to Japan in self-imposed exile after leading a failed coup attempt, and Honinbo Shuei. This six-stone handicap game was played in Japan in 1886, and the record was discovered in Japan in 1992. Records of other earlier games have been lost if indeed they have ever existed.
