1. The Origin of Baduk(Go)

¡Ø Emergence of Baduk in Korea
Because of lack of evidence, it is unclear when Baduk was brought from China to Korea, but it is believed to have been in Old Chosun period. Then it was introduced to Japan during the Three Nation period, through the nation of Paekche, along with other cultural influences. There are two theories about the timing of Baduk' s introduction to Korea. One is the so-called "Kija" theory and the other is the "Han-sagun" theory.

¡Ø The Kija (Qizi, in Chinese) Theory
At the end of the Un dynasty (ancient China), Kija, a wise man, migrated to Korea from China to avoid civil unrest, with 5,000 other people. This movement took with them many cultural notions and items, including Baduk.

¡Ø The Han-sagun [Four Han Settlements] Theory
Circa BC 108, the Han dynasty (China) conquered Wiman Chosun (Korea) and created four regions (Nag-lang, Yim-dun, Hyun-do and Jin-bun) within this colony. At this time Chinese officials and merchants introduced Baduk to this area.

There is some doubt about the Kija theory because of a lack of historical evidence, so on factual and theoretical grounds, the second theory seems more plausible. There is a purported record of Baduk being played during the Three Nation period in the 'History of the Three Nations'. In this book it is mentioned that a monk, Do-rim, from Koguryo (one of three nations of the Korean peninsula) played with Kae-ro, the king of Paekche. This evidence lends weight to the Han-sagun theory, which would imply that Baduk was introduced before the Three Nation period.
