1. The Origin of Baduk(Go)
¡æ Genesis
There is no clear evidence about the origin of Baduk; however, it is widely accepted that the ancient Chinese invented this board game.
¡Ø The Theory of Yo and Sun (Yao and Shun, in Chinese)
Discussion of the origin of Baduk is highly dependent on the ancient legends, and there is little historical evidence. The most popular story amongst them is that Yo and Sun, the emperors of the ancient China, invented the game to teach Danju [Dan Zhu] and Sang-gyun [Shang Jun], their feeble-minded sons.
Bagmulji [Bo Wu Zhi (Records of Investigations of Things)], a classic volume, suggests this as the reason for the invention of Baduk, because there is a phrase "Yojo-wigi, Danju-sunji" meaning that King Yo invented Baduk to improve Danju' s intellect, circa BC 2300. Seol-mun [Shi Ben], another classic, mentions that the emperor Sun created Baduk as a teaching aid and coached his son, Sang-gyun; a third book Joong-hung-seo [Zhong Xing Shu (Golden Age History Restored)] makes a similar reference, but all of these references lack support from historical evidence. These are just myths!

¡Ø Astronomical Theory
For an ancient agricultural society, observing the movement of the stars would be an important way to predict the future and develop a calendar. A theory that has become popular recently suggests early Baduk being used to track the stars' movements. The river Huanghe in China would flood annually, and therefore a method of tracking the seasons was needed. The method possibly took the form of stones on a square grid. This is a very plausible theory.

¡Ø Wu Qingyua' s Theory
Wu Qingyuan 9 dan [known also as Go Seigen, his naturalized name in Japan], the 'father of modern Go', has combined these theories and suggested that Yo devised and taught a method for astronomical tracking. This knowledge was necessary for early civil life, and Asian philosophy.
