The Ten Most Important Events in 20th Century Baduk

10. Cyber Baduk, the new Baduk culture

Since the beginning of the 20th century, many efforts have been made to overcome limitations imposed by time and space. In 1983, Dr. Sung Ki-soo introduced a Baduk computer program. It was only at the level of placing stones on the board by typing in coordinates.
By the end of the 1980s, computer programs were also able to count, and to review plays. Programs were given graphical user interfaces, so that a stone is now placed by clicking a mouse button instead of typing in coordinates. In the 1990s, finally, simultaneous broadcasting of games and commentary became available to anyone in the world with access to the Internet.

Introduction of PC Baduk replaced the period of wooden Baduk table into period of electronic Baduk. A family is enjoying on-line Baduk all together.

The number of users in Korea increased enormously. Currently there are over 6 million Koreans with Internet connections, and 10 sites in Korea alone where cyber Baduk can be played.

So now there is the question of establishing a competition of central importance which will be administered by one major web site among these. Since the mid 1980s, all of the most useful functions of cyber Baduk have been implemented: playing games, setting up matches, studying, and disseminating information. In addition, supplementary functions such as commentary and group games were introduced.
So cyber Baduk is poised to overtake traditional Baduk in convenience and comfort, which will lead to growth in the Baduk population. The information needed to represent a play in Baduk is very simple, consisting only of a choice of black and white and coordinates on the board, so it is easy to write programs to enable people to play games via the Internet.
