8. Baduk TV: The dawning of the Image Age

The Olympic games did not make any profit until the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Even one of today's most profitable competitions, the World Cup, did not make any profit in the beginning.
But with the enormous power of TV broadcasting systems, the Olympics and the World Cup turned became profit-making competitions, with the broadcasting rights and fees as the base of profits. Baduk is not yet distributed worldwide, so it is not as successful as soccer or golf. But the regular broadcasting of an indoor game with little action, as contrasted with active outdoor sports, has significant meaning.

Baduk TV dashed into the main broadcasting and the image days were put off in the end of 5000 years of Baduk history. Hyun Jaehyun, the chief director of Korean Baduk house, is sending off the waves.

So the birth of a Baduk-only channel itself was a very sensational incident in Baduk history. It had an enormous impact on the Baduk-watching public, and earned great affection.

Baduk TV is a cable TV station. Cable TV was created to meet the viewer's demand for specialized information in a strongly information-oriented society. The Baduk channel was created to meet the specific needs of Baduk fans.
Baduk TV celebrated its fifth anniversary in December last year. In the new century, the media are facing big changes. At the end of last year, parliament passed integrated broadcasting legislation, and the broadcasting media are undergoing rapid reorganization.
The age of the monopoly of KBS, MBC and SBS in audience ratings and advertising is over. The new age of national air broadcasting, cable TV, and satellite TV has begun. It is anticipated that home viewers will soon be able to choose from over 100 channels, including between 5 and 60 satellite channels.
