The Ten Most Important Events in 20th Century Baduk

3. Ing Cup, the beginning of international Baduk

The first international competition turned out to be the Fujitsu competition, held in Tokyo, Japan in April, 1988. But Ing Changqi was the motivating force behind the idea of international competitions.
The opening ceremony of the first Ing Cup was held in Beijing, China. It was a spectacular occasion. But some problems occurred during the invitation process.
Out of 16 participants, only one Korean was invited: Cho Hoon-hyun 9-dan. "How could there be only one Korean when there are participants from Australia and America," people asked. "Also, there are 3 Taiwanese participants, Lin Haipung 9-dan, Wang Licheong and Wang Mingwan 9-dan. (The other participants included 4 Chinese players and 6 Japanese players.)
Korea made objections, and there was also a boycott movement. The host nation said, "Just as Lin Haipung is Taiwanese, Cho Chi-hoon is Korean. So there are two Korean participants."
There were also criticisms of the final match between Cho Hoon-hyun 9-dan versus Nie Weiping 9-dan. "Why should all 5 rounds be held in China? That's unfair and ill-mannered!"
Finally, only 3 of the final rounds were held in China, but to tell the truth, I think Ing Changqi deserves to be applauded for this. Let's compare it to current international competitions hosted by Korea. Almost all of the finals are held in Korea. The same with the Fujitsu competition hosted by Japan. In my opinion, Ing was generous to hold the semifinal in Korea. Wouldn't it have sounded great to open the final in his hometown, where he hadn't been to visit for 40 years?
Anyway, Korean Baduk started to make the big transition to world prominence through this victory in the first Ing Cup, and Koreans won the following three competitions in a row. Korea benefited enormously from this competition and Ing Changqi's efforts. The competition also contributed to the internationalization of the Baduk community.
