The Ten Most Important Events in 20th Century Baduk

1. A Copernican revolution in the modern art of Baduk

Of course, the old opening moves still have importance in this new way of seeing the opening; in fact, all of the concepts developed since New Posuk have been ways of reconciling the new moves with the older ones. These older and newer moves are open to endless development, enriching the game of Baduk.
But why emphasize ideas whose time is long past? This is because New Posuk had a major influence on the whole concept of Baduk. Thus we value them as a revolutionary change of paradigm.

¡Ø Change of paradigm

New Posuk is not just a matter of new opening moves, and the new jungsuk which go along with them. It extends to the whole concept of how to play the game, which is what makes it a change of paradigm. The specific ideas of Wu Qingyuan and Kitani, which involved strategies having to do with occupying 2 or 3 of the handicap points during the opening, were only a small part of the new conception of the opening.
Similarly, Chinese style openings and the universal style of Takemiya were simply detailed implementations of the broader ideas of New Posuk. The fact that New Posuk widened the range of jungsuk which could be employed in the opening is just one of the ways it changed the game.

The true revolutionary meaning of New Posuk is that it changed our whole concept of Baduk. Let's take a look at "New Youth Opening Moves" of Kawabata Yasunari, the book which Wu Qingyuan introduced as "the one which best explains the significance of New Posuk in the progress of modern Baduk."
"The New Posuk period of Kitani Minoru and Wu Qingyuan is more than just the glory days of two young geniuses; it is the beginning of the glory days of modern Baduk. New Posuk is the symbol of today's Baduk civilization."
This judgment remains valid today. Baduk today is definitely phenomenally different from the Baduk played before the 1930's, when the new opening moves were introduced.

This does not mean that the new opening moves dominate current Baduk thinking; we have come up with many new concepts since the New Posuk period. And really, the new style of Baduk which is associated with New Posuk was already being developed before the official introduction of the new openings.
But the invention of new opening moves can be regarded as the first step of the larger program of change initiated by New Posuk, which culminated in the concept of place determination of each stone.
