The Ten Most Influential People in Baduk History

10. Lee Chang-ho, Mozart of Baduk

Lee Chang-ho 9-dan is synonymous with Baduk. Not only within Korea, but also within the leading Baduk countries such as Japan and China, he is the first man to be mentioned when talking about Baduk.
With the emergence of Lee Chang-ho, the flow of 5000 years of world Baduk history has changed in a second. Baduk was started from China but settled down and marked its place in Japan after the 17th century.
In the twentieth century, particularly, Japan had reached a very high level whereas Korea and China were pursuing Japan from far behind. But Koreamade an enormous leap ahead, and by the end of the 1990s established itself as the world's strongest Baduk nation. Korea swept ahead of Japan and the newly ascendant China with the discovery of Cho Hoon-hyun, Seo Bong-soo, and Yoo Chang-hyuk 9-dan. If Lee Chang-ho 9-dan had not appeared, Korea, China, and Japan would still be arguing over who is the strongest Baduk nation.

But these days, even Europeans recognize the absolute superiority of Korea, and Lee Chang-ho is in the center of Korean Baduk. He is a very special player and also a conqueror like Napoleon. With his contribution, Korea became the world's strongest Baduk nation.

¡Ø A never ending Conqueror

At the time of liberation, Cho Nam-chul 9-dan brought over Baduk techniques from Japan. In the decades that followed, Korea always imitated Japan. Japan was the strongest and most respected, we learned Japan-made posuk and jungsuk moves and also copied brand new techniques. [Posuk (Japanese: fuseki) means full-board opening strategy; jungsuk (Japanese: joseki) means the sequences of opening plays to attain specific goals, most often in the corners, but also on the sides-editor.]
At present, Japan and China import new theories from Korea, and refer to records of Korean games. Korea, who was always an information importer in the past, is now a information exporter.
