The Ten Most Influential People in Baduk History

8. Ing Changqi and the Internationalization of Baduk

Ing Changqi' s third contribution has entailed both support and controversy. He proposed unusual new Baduk rules aimed at giving clear resolutions to problematic situations in the Korean and Japanese rules, and avoiding possible drawn games. Two examples of such problematic situations are "bent 4 in the corner," where the life or death of the group appears to depend on the outcome of a Pae ("ko" in Japanese) fight, and a game in which there are three simultaneous Pae fights.
Ing wanted his rules introduced in the western nations. [The US Go Congress has adopted these rules, and they will be used in a youth Baduk competition to be held in Hawaii this summer-editor]

The side supporting Ing' s rules argues that they are theoretically more perfect as compared to the Korean and Japanese rules of Baduk. The opposing side argues that any significant departure from the Japanese rules is detrimental to the internationalization of Baduk, and also that it is impractical to require a fixed number of Baduk stones. The advantages and disadvantages of Ing's rules cannot be explored in a short essay such as this. But the crucial point is that the Baduk rules which had been thought to be firmly settled are now being reconsidered. Furthermore Ing Changqi's great international influence cannot be denied.
Although Ing Changqi is not a Baduk expert, he is one of the most influential people in the whole Baduk world. If the Ing Cup had not been founded, could Korea have arisen as a new face in international Baduk? Would the words "Baduk" or "Go-e" ever have been heard in western countries? Or, without Ing Changqi, would it all be "Go?" ["Go-e" is the Taiwanese name for Baduk. For more on the Ing Cup, see part 3 of The Ten Most Important Events of 20th Century Baduk. -editor]
