The Ten Most Influential People in Baduk History

7. Nie Weiping, A Revolutionary of the Board

The Japanese players were so overconfident that before the competition began, the three strongest players on Japan's team promised that they would shave their heads if they lost against China. When Nie Weiping was the only Chinese player still in the contest, and these three were still in the contest as well, no one thought that their hair was in any danger. But to everyone's surprise, Nie Weiping won all three games. This was a turning point for professionals in both China and Korea; suddenly the goal of defeating Japanese players seemed more attainable for all of them.
Nie Weiping won this competition 9 times in a row for three years. He is the peerless hero of Chinese Baduk.

Nie Weiping was born into a rich family, but the family got into the trouble during the Cultural Revolution. Nie Weiping himself spent some time cleaning pigsties on a farm near the Black Dragon River. But he finally managed to escape from this suffering and is now a true hero of China, who has defeated all the world's best Baduk players.
Nie Weiping is often compared with Cho Hoon-hyun 9-dan, of Korea. The strength of Nie Weiping helped the next great generation of Chinese Baduk players, such as Ma Shaochoon and Chang Hao, to rise to prominence.
The Chinese character for Nie Weiping' s family names means "three corners." Kim Soo-young 7-dan, once made Nie Weiping laugh by saying "There is an old Korean Baduk proverb that says ' He who controls three corners has the advantage.' So according to our proverb, you were just born to be a Baduk player!" Joke or no, it seems Kim Soo-young had it about right.
