The Ten Most Influential People in Baduk History

7. Nie Weiping, A Revolutionary of the Board

When you're talking about the development of today's Baduk, you can' t avoid mentioning Japanese Baduk and its 500 years of pro Baduk history. At least until the mid 1980' s, Japan was "the greatest empire of the Baduk board." Accordingly, China and Korea had set the target of overtaking Japan by the end of 20th century. Even excluding the Korean player Cho Chi-hoon and the Chinese player Lin haifeng, expatriates who play in Japan, there are still many great Japanese players like Kobayashi Koichi, Kato Masao and Takemiya Masaki. In addition, Japanese Baduk had the great spiritual leaders, Fujisawa Shuko and Sakata Eio. It is a nation rich in giants of Baduk.

But the Chinese thought differently. It was true enough that Japan had more players at the very top levels of the game than any other nation. But the rules of the team competition were such that if one nation had a best player strong enough to beat all of another nation' s players, that nation would be winner regardless of the performance of the other members of his team. And the Chinese thought that Nie Weiping could do this.
