5. Cho Chi-hoon, A Player with Fighting Spirit

	Cho Chi-hoon is the only player to have dominated the Japanese Baduk community since the introduction of modern Baduk. Born in Korea, Cho Chi-hoon moved to Japan at the age of six and was brought up there. At eleven, he became the youngest child ever to achieve professional status. He holds the records for becoming the youngest 9-dan ever, the youngest title holder ever, the Honinbo title holder for ten years in a row, and winning the three big competitions (Kisei, Meijin, Honinbo) in a single year, three times. His achievements are written large on Japanese Baduk history. But his contribution to Korean Baduk has been greater still. Before Cho Hoon-hyun and Lee Chang-ho became publicly recognized stars, Cho Chi-hoon was an idol not only within the Korean Baduk community, but among all Koreans. Prior to Cho Chi-hoon, there was no area of international achievement in which Koreans could say "We are better than Japan." A young Korean Baduk player's triumph in Japan gave a welcome and tremendously exciting boost to Korean national pride. It created a stir similar to Son Gi-jung's victory in the Marathon and Kim Gi-soo's victory in the Olympics.




Cho Chi-hoon's victory in the 1980 Honinbo tournament was broadcast as top news around Korea; the media attention helped to create a nationwide surge in Baduk's popularity. Cho Chi-hoon's achievements led directly to the creation of many Baduk schools for children, which, in turn, allowed young geniuses to be discovered and trained to become strong professionals. Lee Chang-ho, whose early achievements are similar to those of Cho Chi-hoon, began his career in this way. That's the story of Korean Baduk.
