The Ten Most Influential People in Baduk History

3. Wu Qingyuan, A Giant of the Baduk Board

Sir Isaac Newton, the culminating genius of the 17th century scientific revolution, once said "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." Newton's words apply to all of us who play Baduk. We are dwarves, standing on the shoulders of the Baduk giant, Wu Qingyuan.
Wu Qingyuan is easily the Newton or Einstein of Baduk history. It was he who changed the paradigm of Baduk. Before him, only Tosaku of the17th century had initiated a paradigm change of equal importance which spread throughout the Baduk world.

¡Ø Revolution and creation

Wu Qingyuan's accomplishments are so well known they need no mentioning. Who could be unaware of his revolutionary approach to Baduk opening, or posuk (Japanese "fuseki"), called "New Posuk"? Who could be unaware of the changes he wrought in the use of the fourth line and the importance of the center? And who would deny that introduction of New Posuk marks the beginning of modern Baduk?
But focusing too narrowly on New Posuk, or plays on the fourth line, or the importance of the center, does not do true justice to the magnitude of Wu Qingyuan's contribution.
Wu Qingyuan began by asking "how to maximize the effectiveness of each stone." In his curiosity about the effectiveness of stones, he examined the relationships between stones. The result was his theory that every stone played should be both flexible and balanced. This conclusion led him directly and naturally to the discovery of the use of the fourth line and the center. The use of the fourth rather than the third line, and the center rather than the corners and sides, helps to overcome uneven distribution.
