The Ten Most Influential People in Baduk History

2. Kitani: the Grand Master Plants the Seeds

¡Ø Mrs. Kitani Maharu, hidden heroine of Baduk
But, unlike schools which are directed by committees and rely on government support, the Kitani school was formed entirely by one individual man's lifelong effort. It was an impressive accomplishment, and I am saddened is that this type of Baduk school is no longer a realistic alternative. And I believe that it would be a tremendously good thing if someone like a second Kitani would appear to train present-day students. But in my opinion, the appearance of a second Mrs. Kitani Miharu would be even more desirable.

The time with his students

Mrs. Kitani, the wife of Grand Master Kitani, was an enormous help to and admirer of her husband's students. Normally wives would not be happy about sharing their homes with a number of Baduk students, but Mrs. Kitani welcomed Grand Master Kitani's students and regarded them as a gift.
It is certainly an unfortunate thing for the Japanese Baduk community that since the Kitani school was closed, no school has arisen to continue the Kitani heritage. In my opinion, an in-house school like Grand Master Kitani's probably could no longer exist because a traditional Japanese woman like Mrs. Kitani probably can no longer be found.
By next year, players from the Kitani school will celebrate exceeding a combined rank of 500-dan. As the first in-house student to become a professional, I cannot help being deeply impressed to hear it.
